François André Bossuet is above all a painter of city views and monuments. The painting “De rozenhoedkaai” offers an exceptional version of the classic view in Bruges, seen from the Rozenhoedkaai towards the buildings and monuments along the northward-flowing Reie canal. On the left is the Tanners’ House, and next to it the colonnade of the De Koe almshouse. In the centre, the domes of the former Government Palace are visible. It was built in 1789, based on the design of architect Dumortier, on the site of the Waterhalle. Unfortunately, it was partially destroyed by a fire on 20 February 1878.
