A knight (a word derived from 'rider') was in the Middle Ages originally a mounted and armored soldier (horseman) who had received the knight's battle. This was usually done by the King. Gradually, however, the name was associated with nobility and social status, presumably because the costs of the equipment for knighthood made it possible for the elite to acquire such status.
